As someone who has spent extensive time in the developing world, Melinda Gates thinks President Donald Trump’s alleged comments on Latin American and African countries are neither appropriate nor accurate.

Trump reportedly asked why so many “people from shithole countries” were allowed into the U.S. during a meeting on immigration last week. In an interview with The Financial Times, Gates called those comments “alarming in every way.”

“That kind of disparaging language should never be used about anybody that lives on this planet,” Gates said. “I’m in Africa all the time, that’s not the world I see. I see incredibly entrepreneurial people getting by on meagre means.”

As co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, she oversees a range of initiatives, many of which support the social and economic development of people living in the countries Trump allegedly disparaged. In September, the foundation released a detailed report analyzing the impact of potential cuts to foreign aid spending from the Trump administration.
