MIAMI — Miami Commissioner Ken Russell announced Thursday that he’ll run for US Senate in hopes of defeating Republican Sen. Marco Rubio in 2022.
Russell — a former kite surfer and yo-yo champion who once ran a water sports company that specialized in standup paddle boards — is perhaps the most intriguing character in an already crowded field of Democrats vying to challenge Rubio.
In an exclusive interview at Miami’s City Hall with Insider prior to his announcement, Russell cast himself as a business-friendly Democrat who appeals to voters across the ideological spectrum. He credited the Republican-backed 2017 federal tax law for helping propel an influx of Silicon Valley wealth to Florida, and he touted his work with the tech industry in Miami on issues from affordable housing to preparing for hurricanes and addressing racial diversity.
A city like Miami, Russell said, can work with tech leaders to bring meaningful change to the community. He said one of his greatest accomplishments as commissioner was helping to bring the tech accelerator 500 startups to Miami.
“We have to have short and long-term goals together, and you can’t expect the industry or tech to solve all your problems,” he said.
