Snowflake CEO Frank Slootman made headlines with controversial comments about diversity in the workplace. It wasn’t long before top VCs weighed in.
Slootman said diversity comes second when making hiring decisions at the cloud software company.
“We’re actually highly sympathetic to diversity — we just don’t want that to override merit,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “If I start doing that, I start compromising the company’s mission.” Slootman went on to add that “many” well-known CEOs privately express similar sentiments.
Garry Tan, managing partner of Initialized Capital, doesn’t believe that companies need to choose between inclusive hiring and talented employees.
“You can be pro-merit and pro-diversity. It’s not a dichotomy,” he tweeted. “The best world we could live in and the one I want to build has both.”
