When Meagan Loyst, a 24-year-old VC at Lerer Hippeau, was toying with the idea of a Gen Z VC summit, she had a dream keynote speaker: Harry Stebbings, a Gen Z VC legend himself with a massively popular podcast and $140 million fund. It was a longshot, but she sent him an email anyway.
It took Stebbings all of seven minutes to respond yes.
“I forwarded it to my colleagues in all caps being very excited,” Loyst said. “I might have done a little dance around my room.”
The summit, hosted by Gen Z VCs, an organization founded by Loyst, and venture firm Lerer Hippeau, will take place virtually on September 17. Loyst estimates there will be at least 1,000 attendees, but confessed that was a “very conservative” estimate.
Gen Z VCs began back in October after Loyst tweeted, “Any investors born ’96 or later?” After a huge influx of replies, she created a Slack group and organization for Gen Z VCs to connect.
“Now it’s like a full blown movement,” she said, adding that the Slack group now has close to 9,000 members.
