Innocent-seeming apps can be trojan horses for your information. | Image: Amar Toor / The Verge An Android recording app called iRecorder Screen Recorder began as an innocent screen recording app but turned evil nearly a year after it was first released, as detailed by Ars Technica. The app first came out in September 2021, but after an update the following August, it began recording a minute of audio every 15 minutes and forwarding those recordings, through an encrypted link, to the developer’s server. The whole thing is documented in a blog post from Essential Security against Evolving Threats (ESET) researcher Lukas Stefanko. In the post, Stefanko said the app… Read More

Continue ReadingVerizon warns customer service employees of impending layoffs
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Just days after overhauling its wireless data plans, Verizon on Wednesday held a meeting with a wide audience of customer service employees to notify them of upcoming “restructuring” and “streamlining” measures that are all but certain to result in significant layoffs. More details will be shared tomorrow, May 25th, according to a prerecorded message that employees received. Over 6,000 employees were present on today’s call — The Verge spoke with several of them — but the consolidation measures could end up impacting numbers far beyond that. The warning comes just a month after Verizon posted Q1 ’23 earnings, which fell short of Wall… Read More

Enlarge (credit: maxshutter | iStock / Getty Images Plus) After song lyrics website Genius sued Google in 2019 for allegedly breaching its terms of service by copying its lyrics transcriptions in search results, the United States Supreme Court invited the US solicitor general, Elizabeth Prelogar, to weigh in on how the US viewed the case. The question before Prelogar was whether federal copyright law preempted Genius’ terms of service, which prohibits any of its website visitors from copying lyrics for commercial uses. Yesterday, Prelogar responded, filing a brief that sided with Google. She denied that Genius’ case was a good vehicle to test whether copyright law preempted state-law contract claims… Read More
Continue ReadingRight-to-repair rules are now the law in Minnesota
Image: The Verge Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has signed a groundbreaking right-to-repair law after it passed the state legislature in April. The rules, part of an omnibus appropriations bill, require electronics manufacturers to let independent repair shops and consumers buy the parts and tools necessary to repair their own equipment. But the rules don’t apply to some notable categories, including farm equipment, game consoles, medical devices, and motor vehicles. The new Minnesota rules take effect July 1st, 2024, and they cover products sold on or after July 1st, 2021. If manufacturers sell a product in the state, they must offer residents the equipment to repair it on “fair and reasonable”… Read More

The app’s three new tiers are Peloton App Free, App One, and App Plus; all of which vary in terms of price and what they offer. As the name suggests, Peloton App Free won’t… Read More

Continue ReadingCan a camera company make an app that doesn’t suck? Fujifilm tries again
Fujifilm’s new XApp will be available on May 25th. | Image: Fujifilm At some point a few weeks ago, I decided I couldn’t deal with Fujifilm’s Camera Remote app anymore. So I threw in the towel and bought an SD-to-Lightning adapter, which lets me reliably get photos from my Fujifilm cameras onto my iPhone without any fuss. But it also makes me feel like a damn caveman. It’s supposed to be better than this in 2023. I’ve been using Fujifilm’s mirrorless cameras since the days of the X-T1. But like many others, I’ve had mixed experiences with the company’s mobile app. Just look at those reviews on the App Store… Read More

(Image credit: OnLeaks / MySmartPrice) Image 2 of 2 (Image credit: OnLeaks / MySmartPrice) In either case, the bezel lets you cycle through menu options and other aspects of the interface, but having a physical rotating bezel feels a lot more intuitive and tactile for this than the solution used on the latest models. So, this is an appreciated change, and probably linked to the wearable apparently being called the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. The mention of this name comes from the same source, and it seems then that Samsung thinks of the rotating bezel as being a ‘Classic’ model feature, not a ‘Pro’ feature. We probably won’t also… Read More
